چکیده

A methodology for identifying key structures in migration flow tables is presented in this chapter. The tables contain flows of persons cross-classified by origin, destination and some other characteristic, such as age or ethnicity. This work is important for both understanding aggregate migration patterns in general and for estimating flows in the context of incomplete migration data. The research contained in this chapter represents an important first step in larger project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council on combining migration data in England and Wales. In order to combine data, we need to understand the comparability between different data sources, as well as the underlying structures that drive the migration patterns. For example, is an increase in the ABSTRACT

Describing and Projecting the Age and Spatial Structures of Interregional Migration in Italy

In this paper, we first set out a method for describing the age and spatial structures of interregional migration in Italy over time using the parameters of a saturated log-linear model. Second, we use this information and the log-linear model to project these structures forward based on a set of assumptions about the overall, main effect, and interaction parameters. These two sections of the p...

Estimating Interregional Utility Differentials∗

The major objective of this paper is to estimate regional utility levels based on interregional migration data. We first revealed three stylized facts concerning migration behavior by examining long-term Japanese data on interregional migration. We then uncovered inconsistency between net migration and utility differential in the presence of distance-related migration costs. Based on the styliz...

Using age and spatial flow structures in the indirect estimation of migration streams.

This article outlines a formal model-based approach for inferring interregional age-specific migration streams in settings where such data are incomplete, inadequate, or unavailable. The estimation approach relies heavily on log-linear models, using them to impose some of the regularities exhibited by past age and spatial structures or to combine and borrow information drawn from other sources....

Migration Processes Modeling with Cellular Automation

The problem of interregional migration flows modeling is being studied. The conjecture that modeling household migration behavior at local level in view of community interactions and using cellular automata results in adequate forecasting of interregional migration flows has been numerically confirmed. A computer program was developed in order to implement the cellular automaton suggested in th...

Wages Differentials and Interregional Migration in the U.S.: an Empirical Test of the “Option Value of Waiting” Theory

The ‘option value of waiting’ theory applied to interregional migration predicts that a potential migrant actually moves only when the wage differential between origin and destination places exceeds a certain threshold, which might be much higher than the Marshallian trigger. In this paper we exploit the panel structure of a dataset on interregional migration among nineteen MSAs in the US from ...
